Publisher: Antenna Audio Inc.
Author: Antenna Audio
Audio lenght: 35 min.

This audio tour features the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum's major retrospective of the work of abstract expressionist sculptor David Smith. "David Smith: A Centennial" presents 110 sculptures dating 1932-65 as well as a selection of related drawings. The hour-long, comprehensive audio program explores 22 of the works on display. Each work is accompanied by readings of fellow artists, Smith's contemporary critics, such as Clement Greenberg and Rosalind Krauss, and the many writers who helped establish him as one of the great sculptors of the 20th century. These selections offer a glimpse into the on-going discussions about each sculpture's meaning and significance, a process each of us engages in simply by looking at Smith's work.

As special highlights, the tour contains archival audio of David Smith, speaking in interviews with art historian David Sylvester in 1961, and recorded lecturing at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in the 1950s.
