Born in St. Louis, Missouri, T.S. Eliot eventually took British citizenship and became editor of the prestigious London publishing house Faber & Faber. Eliot is regarded as the foremost modernist poet and a leader of the avant-garde in literature. While Eliot's writing was experimental, his politics and view on religion were quite conservative. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1948.
