In this address to the National Press Club, General Colin Powell talks about his ever-active retired life, particularly his involvement in the crusade called America's Promise, an effort to give America's children the resources they need to be successful in life. General Powell became an American hero during the Persian Gulf War in 1991. He served in the United States Army for 35 years, including the post of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1989-1993. He is the recipient of two Presidential Medals of Freedom, an honorary knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II, and numerous other honors. This speech took place on May 17, 1999.
