The gothic macabre tales are well represented, including "The Tell Tale Heart", "The Cask of Amontillado", and "The Fall of the House of Usher". Supernatural adventure also appears, in "M.S. Found in a Bottle" and "A Descent into the Maelstrom". The science-fiction side of mesmerism is demonstrated in "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar".
