Teenage Diaries: Juan in Denver, CO, Back to Mexico
Publisher: Radio Diaries Author: Juan in Denver, CO Audio lenght: 13 min.
"There was a moment where, and I'll tell him, well, grandfather, this is time for me to go, you know, have to go back, and I search in my pockets and I find, you know, some money and I say, 'Well, you know, now I can help out,' you know. And he just laughs. And I say, 'Why are you laughing?' He says: 'Well, I never expected you to give me some money, 'cause it's like it was yesterday when you were a kid, and everything.' And then, I still remember the smile on his face." Teenage Diaries producer Joe Richman gives tape recorders to young people around the country to document their lives. Juan is a Mexican teenager. In his first diary, Looking at the Rio Grande, Juan's story was about his life as an illegal immigrant living in El Cenizo, Texas, several years after he and his family crossed the border into the United States. In this diary, Juan has left his family in Texas and moved to Denver, CO to look for work. He returns to Mexico to visit his dying grandfather. This is his story as originally heard on National Public Radio's All Things Considered.
